01
9-post Instagram feed design

A cohesive 9-post grid proves you can build a visual brand identity. It's the first thing clients check when hiring an SMM: can you make their feed look professional?

1
Pick a fake brand to design for

Don't use real brands. Create a mock business like:

  • A wellness coach ("Bloom Coaching")
  • A small coffee roaster ("Ember Roasters")
  • A fitness studio ("Studio 26")
  • A skincare line ("Dewey")

Write a one-line brand description, e.g., "A Manila-based wellness coach helping women in their 30s reset their habits."

2
Define the visual identity

Before designing, lock in:

  • 3–5 brand colors (use coolors.co to generate palettes)
  • 2 fonts max: one display, one body
  • A consistent photo style (bright & airy, moody, minimal, etc.)
  • Recurring visual elements (shapes, frames, icons)
Why this matters
Clients pay extra when their feed feels like a cohesive brand, not random posts. Consistency is the skill.
3
Design 9 posts in Canva

Open Canva, search "Instagram Post" (1080x1080). Design 9 posts using a mix of content types:

  • 3 educational posts (tips, how-tos, lists)
  • 2 promotional posts (service, offer, CTA)
  • 2 lifestyle / behind-the-scenes
  • 1 testimonial or social proof
  • 1 quote or inspirational

Keep the visual system consistent across all 9: same colors, fonts and layout logic.

4
Arrange as a 3x3 grid preview

In Canva, create one 1080x1080 canvas and lay out all 9 posts together as a grid. This shows clients how the feed looks as a whole, not just individual posts.

  • 3–5 individual posts shown larger

02
30-day content calendar

Clients need to see that you can plan, not just design. A content calendar proves you think strategically about what to post, when, and why.

1
Create a Google Sheet

Columns to include:

  • Date
  • Day of week
  • Platform (IG feed, Story, Reel, TikTok)
  • Content pillar (Educate / Entertain / Promote / Inspire)
  • Caption draft
  • Hashtags
  • Status (Draft / Approved / Scheduled / Posted)
2
Map out 30 days of content

Use a 60/30/10 rule:

  • 60% value (education, tips, insights)
  • 30% connection (behind-the-scenes, stories, personal)
  • 10% promotion (offers, services, CTAs)

Aim for 4–5 feed posts per week + daily stories. Don't overpost. Consistency beats frequency.

3
Fill in each row completely

Don't leave placeholder text. Write out:

  • The hook for each post
  • A draft caption (50–150 words)
  • 15–20 relevant hashtags per post
  • Post time (use Later's best-times guide)
Screenshots to capture
  • Full sheet showing 30 days filled in
  • Zoomed-in view of 3–5 rows with full captions and hashtags
  • Content pillar summary (pie chart or breakdown)
03
Caption + hook bank

Writing captions that convert is the #1 skill clients pay for. Prove you can write hooks that stop the scroll and calls to action people follow.

1
Write 20 scroll-stopping hooks

The first line is everything. Write 20 hooks for your fake brand using these formulas:

  • "The mistake most [audience] make when [topic]..."
  • "I spent [time/money] learning this so you don't have to:"
  • "If I had to start over as a [role], here's what I'd do:"
  • "Unpopular opinion:"
  • "POV: you just [situation]"
2
Write 10 full captions

Each caption should follow this structure:

  • Hook (1–2 lines, grabs attention)
  • Context or story (2–3 short paragraphs)
  • Main lesson or insight
  • CTA (comment, save, share, DM, click link in bio)

Keep paragraphs short, 2–3 lines max. Most people read on their phones.

3
Build hashtag sets by topic

Clients love hashtag banks. Create 4–5 saved hashtag sets (each 20 tags) for different post types:

  • Educational posts
  • Lifestyle / personal
  • Promotional
  • Community / engagement

Mix big (100k+), medium (10–100k), and small (under 10k) hashtags in each set.

  • Hashtag sets organized by category
