Build a portfolio before your first client.

Clients don't hire "willing to learn". They hire people who can show their work. Fill in the six steps below, including three sample projects, and you get a portfolio you can link in every application. Everything saves to your account as you type.

Pick your niche

One niche. A portfolio that says "I do everything" reads like "I have done nothing". You can build a second one later.

Niche

Write a 2-line intro

Line 1: what you do and for whom. Line 2: how you work or what the client gets. No "passionate", no "hardworking".

Add 3 sample projects

Make up a business and do the work for it, then show the result. Label it as a sample. Never pass off a mock brand as a paying client: clients check, and it ends the conversation.

Ideas for your niche

Tools you use

Only tick tools you could use on a test task tomorrow. Clients ask you to share your screen and show them.

Tools

Proof instead of testimonials

If you don't have client reviews, use courses, test tasks and character references instead. Every line here must be real.

One per line, with the year. Free ones count: HubSpot, Google, Meta Blueprint, Canva Design School.
One sentence with a number. A paid test task you passed counts, even if you didn't get the job.
From a former boss, teacher or org head who saw you work. Ask them for 1 to 2 sentences, word for word.

Contact and availability

Use a professional email. Test every link in a private browser window before you send it.

90 seconds. Face on camera, say who you help and show one sample.

Where to host it

Pick one and finish it today. A link that works beats a beautiful site you never publish. Put the link in your OnlineJobs.ph profile, Upwork profile, LinkedIn featured section and every application.

Canva website

Best for social media, design and video VAs. It looks like a real site and it's free.

  1. Search Canva templates for "portfolio website".
  2. Paste your text from this builder. Add screenshots of each sample.
  3. Click Publish website. The free plan gives you a my.canva.site link.

Most visual. Takes 2 to 3 hours.

Google Drive folder

Best for EAs, bookkeeping and admin. Clients can open the actual sheet or doc.

  1. Make one folder: "Maria Santos - VA Portfolio".
  2. Save this page as a PDF and put it first. Name files clearly: "01 Calendar plan - sample.pdf".
  3. Share, General access: Anyone with the link, Viewer. Test it logged out.

Fastest. Takes 30 minutes.

Notion page

Best for ops, automation and GHL VAs. Clients who already work in Notion will feel at home.

  1. Create a page, paste your text, add a toggle or sub-page per project.
  2. Embed Loom videos and images straight into the page.
  3. Share, Publish to web. Turn off editing and comments.

Cleanest for systems work. Takes about an hour.

The number one portfolio mistake I see: a Google Drive link that says "You need access". The client will not request it. They will move to the next applicant. Open your link in a private window before every send.
